Acupuncture has long been used to treat a very broad range of conditions including urinary problems such as cystitis, urinary tract infections, interstitial cystitis, leakage, frequency of urination or stress incontinence. Acupuncture can initiate changes in the brain, glands, muscle tissue and elsewhere contributing to a host of chemical and biological changes in the body.
Several studies support acupuncture as a potentially successful treatment of urinary urgency, frequency, and urgency incontinence and a 2005 study at Portland University in Oregon has shown that acupuncture may be an effective therapy for overactive bladder. Women who received four weekly bladder-specific acupuncture treatments had significant improvements in bladder capacity, urgency, frequency, and quality-of-life scores as compared with women who received placebo acupuncture treatments.
